An hour later we were up and dressed, ready to face the last-minute shoppers in York. I’d dressed in an old purple t-shirt and a thin grey loose polo-neck jumper, it was long enough to cover my bum and was so soft it just made me want to curl up inside it. My customary skinny leg black jeans and my boots completed my look. Elliot looked ravishing. His black jeans and boots were topped off with a grey t-shirt worn under a thin black v-neck jumper. We went downstairs and, as promised, my mum cooked us a beautiful fry up of eggs, bacon, tomatoes, sausage and mushrooms. My dad was nowhere to be seen having taken my nephews, Oscar and Charlie, to the park. Ruth was still in bed.
We’d decided to spend only the late morning and early afternoon Christmas shopping, not wanting to spend too long in what would be a frantic city on Christmas Eve. Elliot insisted he buy the boys a present each for Christmas, but I persuaded him that we should buy them something between us. I found it hard enough thinking what to buy them, never mind picking something for him to get them as well. What do you get a seven and five-year-old these days? We settled on two monster Lego sets from the high street store. Both had motors with them and looked far too complicated. Elliot though, was excited by the presents stating that he had loved Lego when he was younger. I did wonder whether he’d chosen the presents for himself or for Oscar and Charlie, and when I’d told him he would have to help them with the building of the sets, he beamed with excitement. I’d tutted at him wondering who was the biggest kid, Elliot or my nephews?
But he was happy, so happy. In fact, I’d never seen him so full of life and smiles. He seemed to really like my mum and dad and was so excited about meeting Oscar and Charlie. I wondered whether it was the closeness of our family relationships that appealed to him. He’d never had a Christmas with his mum and dad since he left for London.
It had started snowing at lunch time. The quiet expectation that it was going to be a white Christmas was exciting and the snow had been forecast to keep falling until late on boxing day. The shopping streets in York filled up even more as the time progressed. We decided to head back to my parents. I wanted to see my nephews, not too keen on seeing whether my sister was still around, but maybe I could make an exception to our normal coldness to each other. It was Christmas, after all. I tutted at myself, Elliot’s good mood was rubbing off on me.
We arrived back at my parents and opened the door to be greeted by chaos. Oscar and Charlie were running around, playing an incredibly noisy game that seemed to centre around chasing each other all through the house.
